What Are the Requirements to Become an ASSE Exchange Student?

Becoming an exchange student is an exciting opportunity. Spending a semester or a full school year abroad allows students to experience a new culture, attend school in another country, and grow in ways that are difficult to replicate at home.

But before students can begin this adventure, many families ask the same question: what are the requirements to become an exchange student?

While every program may have slightly different criteria, most high school exchange programs look for a few key qualities that help ensure students have a successful and rewarding experience abroad.

Being the Right Age for a High School Exchange Program

ASSE high school exchange programs are designed for students between 15 and 18 years old. This age range allows students to fully participate in the local high school system while also being mature enough to adapt to living in a different country.

Programs typically place students in grades equivalent to sophomore, junior, or sometimes senior year. At this stage, students are old enough to handle the independence of living abroad but still young enough to benefit greatly from cultural immersion.

Maintaining Good Academic Standing

Students don’t need perfect grades to become an ASSE exchange students, but they do need to demonstrate that they can keep up with school responsibilities. Here at ASSE we require a minimum of a 2.7 GPA.

We generally expect students to have a positive attitude toward learning. Schools abroad want exchange students who will participate in class, engage with teachers, and contribute positively to the school environment. In other words, motivation and effort often matter just as much as grades.

Showing Maturity and Responsibility

Living abroad for a school year requires a certain level of independence. Students must adapt to a new environment, respect the rules of their host family, and manage their daily responsibilities.

Therefore, we look for students who show maturity, flexibility, and respect for others. This doesn’t mean students need to be perfect or extremely outgoing, but they should be open to new experiences and willing to step outside their comfort zone. These qualities are discussed during our application process or interviews.

Being Open to Cultural Differences

One of the most important requirements for becoming an exchange student isn’t academic at all, it’s attitude.

Exchange students live with host families, attend local schools, and become part of a different culture. Being curious, respectful, and open-minded is essential for making the most of the experience.

Students who approach their exchange year with curiosity and a willingness to learn tend to adapt more easily and build stronger connections with the people around them.

Meeting Program and Travel Requirements

Finally, students must meet the practical requirements necessary to travel and study abroad. This can include items such as passports, visas when required, health insurance, and participation in program orientations before departure.

ASSE will guide you through this process to make sure everything is completed correctly before you leave.

The Most Important Requirement: Curiosity

While there are practical requirements to become an exchange student, the most important quality is often curiosity.

Students who are eager to learn about new cultures, meet new people, and experience life in another country often gain the most from their exchange year. The experience may begin with an application, but it quickly becomes something much bigger, a personal journey of growth, independence, and discovery.
