You’ve done it! Your paperwork is complete, your host family is confirmed, and you finally know which city you’ll be calling home during your high school exchange program abroad. Half the stress is gone… right?
But there’s still one thought in the back of your mind: “I don’t know anyone there. I’ll have to make new friends from scratch.”
That’s completely normal! Every exchange student feels that same nervous excitement before their journey. Moving to a new country means adjusting to a new school, lifestyle, and culture. But the good news? Finding friends abroad isn’t as hard as it seems and it can even become one of the best parts of your high school exchange program.
We’ve gathered advice and real experiences from former exchange students to help you connect, feel at home, and build friendships that will last a lifetime.
It may sound obvious, but starting a simple conversation is often the hardest step especially when you’re new. Remember, everyone in your new school was once in your position too!
The best part of joining a student exchange program is that many of your classmates will be just as curious about you as you are about them. You already have something in common: you’re sharing this unique high school experience together.
Don’t overthink it, ask about their favorite classes, sports, or weekend plans. Most people will appreciate your effort and enthusiasm.
And keep an open mind! Some of your best friends might not come from your class, they could be from another club, a different grade, or even outside school.
One of the easiest ways to make friends during your high school study abroad program is to get involved. Most schools offer clubs, teams, and extracurricular activities from theater and art to science or community service.
Joining a club not only helps you meet students with similar interests, but it also helps you adapt faster to your new school life. You’ll practice the language, share fun experiences, and build friendships naturally through teamwork and shared goals.
Plus, clubs often lead to weekend outings and events, perfect chances to connect beyond the classroom.
The first few weeks of your exchange year abroad are full of opportunities to meet people. Welcome events, sports games, and student gatherings are organized specifically to help new students (like you!) settle in.
Since most friendship groups aren’t formed yet, this is the perfect time to jump in and meet others. Everyone is still getting to know each other, so take advantage of that open atmosphere, you’ll feel less pressure and more confidence.
Being an exchange student means saying “yes” to new experiences, even when they feel a little scary. The more open and curious you are, the faster you’ll make friends and feel at home.
Every conversation, every club, every invitation is a chance to grow. Don’t be afraid to take the first step, it’s often all it takes to start a friendship.
And remember: everyone is rooting for you.
Many high schools and exchange student communities have Facebook or WhatsApp groups where students share events, schedules, or local recommendations.
Reach out before your program starts, it’s a great way to recognize a few names and faces ahead of time. By the time you arrive, you might already have someone waiting to show you around!
We’re here to help, share your question or concern, and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible!
