High School Exchange in Australia (15-18 years old)

You’ll be welcomed with a cheerful “G’Day!” when you arrive in Australia. Your host family will speak English, though with a charming Aussie twist that blends British roots with relaxed local flair. Compared to the U.S., school life in Australia is more laid-back but still encourages independence, creativity, and curiosity.

If you choose to study abroad in Australia, your experience will kick off with a 4-day orientation camp in Sydney, featuring a guided walk around the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge, a ferry ride to Taronga Zoo, a surf lesson at Manly Beach, a guided tour of the Sydney Opera House, and visits to Sydney Tower and Darling Harbour. What a great way to start your exchange!

  • Fun Facts About Australia:
    • Australia is huge!
It’s about the same size as the continental U.S. so when you say you’re studying abroad in Australia, that could mean beaches, deserts, rainforests, a small town, or a suburb of a city!

    • Christmas in summer? Yes, please!
Since Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, holidays like Christmas and New Year’s happen during beach season. Santa might show up in flip-flops!

    • Aussie slang is its own language.
You’ll hear fun expressions like “no worries,” “mate,” “barbie” (for BBQ), and “arvo” (afternoon). You’ll be talking like a local in no time.

    • Shark Week is real life.
Australia is famous for its unique wildlife—sharks, yes, but also adorable koalas, sleepy wombats, and wild emus.

    • School uniforms are the norm.
Most Aussie high school students wear uniforms, and many schools have outdoor classrooms, surf clubs, or cool after-school activities.

You’ll be encouraged to try new things, connect across cultures, and grow more independent in a friendly and supportive environment.

Study abroad in Australia means living on a continent of stunning contrasts: vibrant cities like Sydney and Melbourne, tropical rainforests, the vast Outback, and world-famous natural wonders like the Great Barrier Reef. Wherever your host family is located—urban, coastal, or rural—you’ll experience unique wildlife, rich history, and everyday Aussie culture.

You’ll attend a local Australian high school, make lifelong friends, and enjoy life with a kind and welcoming host family. Since Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, you’ll enjoy reversed seasons, imagine starting your semester in sunny February while it’s winter back home! With every school day, family meal, and outdoor adventure, you’ll grow more confident, globally aware, and connected to the world.
