High School Exchange in Moldova (15-18 years old)

Why not discover the rich cultural heritage of Moldova, a small, lesser-known country nestled between Romania and Ukraine, as an ASSE high school exchange student?

Situated at the crossroads of Latin, Slavic, and Balkan cultures, Moldova offers a unique glimpse into the layered history of Eastern Europe. Over centuries, this region has been shaped by the influences of Tartars, Turks, Ukrainians, Poles, and Russians. These diverse roots are still visible in Moldova’s architecture, language, customs, and community traditions. From dramatic cave monasteries and medieval fortresses to peaceful rolling hills and renowned vineyards, Moldova’s landscapes are full of natural beauty and historical intrigue.

No Language Requirement! Whether you speak the language or not, you’ll pick it up naturally through school, family life, and everyday conversations.

  • Fun Facts About Moldova:
    • Moldovans love music and dance.
Traditional folk music is a huge part of Moldovan culture. At festivals, you’ll hear joyful tunes and see colorful circle dances known as “the hora”.

    • Hidden Caves and Fortresses – You can explore medieval forts and secret caves that feel straight out of an adventure movie.

    • Land of Sunflowers – Moldova’s countryside is covered with sunflower fields in the summer, making it feel like you’re walking through a giant postcard.

    • Chişinău, the capital, is very green. With parks, tree-lined streets, and botanical gardens, Chişinău is one of Europe’s greenest capital cities.

    • Moldovan food is super comforting.
Expect cozy dishes like “mămăligă” (cornmeal mush with cheese and sour cream), “plăcinte” (savory or sweet pastries), and lots of fresh fruits and veggies from local gardens.

Moldovans are known for their compassion, resilience, and warm hospitality. As a student in our high school exchange program in Moldova, you’ll experience this firsthand by living with a carefully selected host family. Most Moldovans speak Romanian, the official language, but you may also hear Russian spoken in certain regions. Through daily immersion, you’ll learn how to navigate a different culture, appreciate new customs, and grow into a more confident, globally minded version of yourself.

Studying abroad in Moldova isn’t about checking tourist sites off a list—it’s about full cultural immersion. You’ll become part of a close-knit community where traditions matter, neighbors support one another, and everyday life is grounded in connection. Whether you’re learning to cook traditional meals, participating in folk celebrations, or helping your host family tend the garden, you’ll quickly feel like you belong.
